Celebrate National Burger Day at Jack's Ovens!

Every year since 2016, the Thursday preceding the Summer Bank Holiday Weekend is recognised as National Burger Day and is dedicated to celebrating the unmatched tastiness of one of the world's most-loved foods. Spearheaded by Mr Hyde, an email service that offers a wide range of lifestyle content, National Burger Day will this year take place on the 24th of August.

The history of the burger is a complex one, dating back to Rome in the 1st century A.D. with a dish that consisted of minced meat mixed with peppers, pine nuts, wine and garum (a type of fermented fish sauce). Fast forward more than a thousand years to the 13th century and we find reference to slabs of beef being carried beneath the saddles of the Mongol horsemen; during the long day spent riding, the beef patties would be perfectly tenderised ready for cooking and eating on the go.

A few hundred years later in 1747, Hannah Glasse published her seminal cookbook entitled 'The Art of Cookery made Plain and Easy'. In it was a recipe for 'Hamburg Sausage', which consisted of 'a smoked sausage made of ground beef, pepper, cloves, nutmeg, garlic, vinegar, salt, and red wine, to be served on toast'. 'Hamburg steak' appeared in the Oxford English Dictionary in 1802, its definition being 'a salted, minced ground beef, slightly smoked and mixed with onions and breadcrumbs'.

At the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, New York, in 1885, two brothers were serving sausage sandwiches. After running out of the sausages, Charles and Frank Menches started serving ground beef sandwiches which they called 'Hamburgers', the first reference to this name being used. At Wisconsin's Seymour Fair in the same year, an enterprising teenager named Charlie Nagree served meatball sandwiches that could be eaten easily on the move. It was in 1948 that the McDonald brothers began making hamburgers, quickly followed in 1953 by Burger King. The rest, as they say, is history, with burgers being enjoyed by people all over the world.

Here at Jack's Ovens, one of the bestselling items on our lunch menu is our Monterey Jack cheeseburger. We freshly cook the best-quality beef patties, sandwiching them in a fluffy barm and smothering them with genuine Monterey Jack cheese, resulting in a filling, convenient and oh-so-tasty meal. For those with big appetites, you can add an order of golden fries, cooked to perfection in our air fryer. Delicious!
